Nail Removal

Nail Removal

Ingrown toenails can be a painful and unpleasant but common foot disorder. They can occur due totight footwear, or as a result of genetics. If an ingrown nail continues to linger or keeps recurring orbecomes infected then it may be time to remove it. This nail procedure can be done permanently ornon-permanently. The term matrixectomy is the medical term that means removing the nail andpermanently killing the cells to prevent regrowth.

Ingrown toenails can occur at any age and can prevent you from your daily activities. It is important tosee a Chiropodist for an assessment if this occurs or if there are signs of an infection; such asredness, swelling, heat, pus or pain.

Should you be scheduled for a nail removal we will try to make the procedure as comfortable aspossible. We provide televisions in our treatment room so you can watch your favourite show duringthe procedure, or you may bring in headphones or tablets or read a book. The full procedure itself willtake roughly 20-30 minutes. During which we will first freeze your toe with a local anesthetic so that itis numb during the entire procedure. The numbing will last roughly 1-3 hours. After which we will usesterile instruments to remove the ingrown nail and/or apply a chemical to prevent regrowth. We willalso provide you with at home post-op instructions to follow to allow for a smooth recovery.

Nail removal is a common foot disorder and at the Family Care Foot Clinic our staff and team will tryand make any procedure as comfortable as possible.
